Brazil taught me to be a surrealist

  „Brazil taught me to be a surrealist“, betitelt Eva Asaad 2016 ihre 1987 entstandenen Fotos, nachdem sie diese fast 30 Jahre später zu neuen surrealen Bildern überarbeitet hat. Die Überlagerung der (meist) weiblichen Körper mit Samen von Waldreben erinnert an die surrealistische Praxis, organisches Material wie Fell oder Federn über Körper zu legen. Dieser Eingriff nimmt der Fotografie ihren dokumentarischen Impetus und führt das Zufällige und Assoziative als neue Kriterien ein. Die ursprüngliche Neugierde am Bild der Bewohnerinnen, an ihren Bräuchen und Aberglauben – es war Silvester und die weiß gekleideten Frauen ließen Opfergaben für die Meeresgöttin Yemanjá zu Wasser – ist hinter die künstlerische Transformation getreten, die den Bildern der Fremden aber auch den Selbstporträts Autonomie verleihen.

"Brazil taught me to be a surrealist" is the title which, in 2016, Eva Asaad gave to the photographs she made in 1987, reworking them into new, surrealist images almost 30 years later. The layering of (mostly) female bodies with the seeds of forest vines is reminiscent of the surrealist practice of laying organic material such as fur or feathers over human bodies. This intervention deprives the photographic medium of its documentary impetus and introduces the new criteria of coincidence and association. Her original curiosity about images of the inhabitants, their customs and superstitions - it was New Year's Eve and women dressed in white were launching offerings to the sea goddess Yemanjá into the waves - stepped back in favour of artistic transformations which grant autonomy to her images of strangers but also to her self-portraits.   Ruth Horak
